Cloud Certification Prerequisites Guide (2026)
What you actually need before sitting each major cloud certification in 2026. Experience, skills, and recommended background for AWS, Azure, GCP, CISSP, and CCNA.

Table of Contents
Recommended vs. Required
The single most important thing to understand: almost every IT certification uses recommended prerequisites, not required ones. You can book and sit any exam regardless of your background. Prerequisites are guidance about the level of preparation needed to pass.
The exceptions are certifications from ISC2 (CISSP, CCSP), ISACA (CISM, CISA), and PMI (PMP). These require verified work experience before you receive the full credential. You can still sit the exam without experience; you just get "Associate" or "candidate" status until you earn the experience.
Bottom line: If you can study for it and pass, you can hold the credential. Don't let recommended prerequisites stop you from booking. Let them inform how much you study.
AWS Certification Prerequisites
AWS removed formal prerequisites in 2018. Every exam is open to everyone. Here's what AWS recommends:
Recommended: 6 months of general IT or cloud exposure. Beginner-friendly. No coding required. Many career changers take this as their very first IT certification.
Recommended: 1 year of hands-on AWS experience. In practice, candidates pass these after 3-6 months of focused study with labs, even without job experience.
Recommended: 2+ years of production AWS experience. These exams are hard to pass without real scenarios in your background. Labs alone are usually insufficient.
Recommended: 2-5 years of the specific domain (networking, security, ML). Candidates should already hold the SAA-C03 or equivalent knowledge before attempting.
Azure Certification Prerequisites
Microsoft also uses recommended, not required, prerequisites. Their published guidance:
No prerequisites. Beginner-focused. Covers cloud concepts, core Azure services, pricing, and governance.
Recommended: 6 months of Azure administration experience. Hands-on with Azure CLI and PowerShell helps significantly.
Microsoft suggests AZ-104 knowledge first, though not required. Design-heavy exam that assumes administration fluency.
Requires either AZ-104 or AZ-204 as a true prerequisite. You must hold one before the AZ-400 credential is granted.
Note: Azure Expert-level certifications (AZ-305, AZ-400) are the exception. They require a passing Associate credential before the Expert badge is issued.
Google Cloud Prerequisites
Google Cloud has no exam prerequisites. Recommendations:
- Cloud Digital Leader: None. Business-focused, non-technical.
- Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE): 6+ months GCP experience recommended.
- Professional Cloud Architect (PCA): 3+ years industry experience, 1+ year on Google Cloud.
- Professional Data Engineer (PDE): 3+ years industry experience with data systems, 1+ year on GCP.
- Professional Machine Learning Engineer (PMLE): 3+ years ML experience including 1+ year on GCP.

Build My RoadmapSecurity Certification Prerequisites
5 years of cumulative paid experience in 2+ of the 8 CISSP domains. One year waived with a 4-year degree or approved credential. You can pass the exam first and earn Associate of ISC2 status while gaining experience (up to 6 years).
5 years IT experience, 3 in information security, 1 in a CCSP CBK domain. CISSP holders automatically meet the requirement.
5 years of information security management experience, 3 of which must be in 3+ of the 4 CISM domains. Some substitutions allowed.
5 years of IS audit, control, or security experience. Substitutions available for degrees and other certifications.
No formal prerequisite. CompTIA recommends 2 years of IT admin experience with a security focus. Entry point for most cybersecurity careers.
2 years of information security experience OR completing EC-Council's official training. Training waives the experience requirement.
No formal prerequisite, but the exam is hands-on penetration testing. Candidates should have Linux and networking fundamentals plus 100+ hours of practice before attempting.
Networking Certification Prerequisites
No prerequisites. Recommended: 1 year of networking experience. Many students pass CCNA with no industry experience through dedicated home lab work.
No prerequisite. CCNA knowledge strongly recommended. Requires passing one core exam plus one concentration exam.
No formal prerequisite. CompTIA recommends A+ certification or 9-12 months of networking experience.
Project Management Certs
With a 4-year degree: 36 months of project management experience plus 35 hours of formal PM education. Without a degree: 60 months of experience plus the 35 hours of education.
Secondary degree (high school diploma) plus 23 hours of project management education. Entry-level. No work experience required.
No prerequisites. Practitioner level requires passing Foundation first.
Starting From Zero
If you have zero IT experience, the best entry points by career goal:
- Cloud career: CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) or AWS Cloud Practitioner. Budget: $100-$200.
- Security career: CompTIA Security+ is the industry standard. Prerequisite: A+ recommended, not required.
- Networking career: Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Both are beginner-friendly.
- Data/AI career: Azure AI-900 or GCP Cloud Digital Leader. Non-technical entry points.
- Project management: CAPM (PMI) - only 23 hours of education required.
Avoid starting with: CISSP, AWS SAP-C02, GCP PCA, OSCP, CCIE. These are expert-level and nearly impossible to pass without 2-5+ years of domain experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do AWS certifications have prerequisites?
AWS no longer requires prior certifications for any exam. They publish recommended experience (e.g., 1 year for associate-level, 2+ years for professional-level), but you can take any exam at any time.
Do I need experience to pass CISSP?
To become fully certified, yes - you need 5 years of cumulative paid experience in 2+ of the 8 CISSP domains. You can pass the exam without this experience and earn Associate of ISC2 status for up to 6 years while you gain the required experience.
Should beginners start with AWS Cloud Practitioner or SAA?
True beginners with no cloud experience benefit from starting with Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02). It builds foundational vocabulary and service awareness. Candidates with IT backgrounds and some cloud exposure can often skip straight to SAA-C03.
Are prerequisites strictly enforced for exam booking?
No. Almost all IT certifications use recommended prerequisites, not required ones. You can book any exam regardless of background. The prerequisites exist as guidance so you understand what level of preparation is needed.
