AWS Recertification Guide: Keep Your Credential Current

AWS certifications expire after three years. Recertification ensures your knowledge stays current with the latest AWS services and best practices. This guide explains your options and the most efficient approach.

Recertification Overview

All AWS certifications have a three-year validity period. You can recertify by passing the current version of the same exam, passing a higher-level exam, or taking the free recertification assessment. See also our renewal guide for additional details.

Timeline and Deadlines

• Certification earned: 3-year clock starts
• Month 30 (6 months before expiry): First renewal reminder from AWS
• Month 33 (3 months before expiry): Free recertification exam becomes available
• Month 36: Certification expires if not renewed
• After expiry: Must pass the full current exam at full price

Recertification Options

1. Take the free online recertification assessment (recommended)
2. Pass the current version of the same full exam
3. Pass a higher-level exam in the same track (renews all lower-level certs)

Free Recertification Exams

AWS offers free, shorter recertification assessments through your AWS Certification account. These are online, unproctored exams with fewer questions (approximately 40 minutes). They cover current exam content and are available 3 months before your certification expires.

If Your Certification Has Lapsed

If your certification has already expired, you need to pass the full current exam at the standard exam price. Your previous certification history is still visible in your account, but the credential is marked as expired. Your Credly badge will also show as expired.

Best Recertification Strategy

Set calendar reminders at 6 months and 3 months before expiry. Take the free recertification exam as soon as it becomes available. If you are planning to advance to a higher-level certification anyway, time your exam to coincide with your renewal window.
